What is a good morning routine for school?
A good morning routine for school allows you enough time to get yourself ready and your kids ready without stress and allows margin time for the unexpected. A good morning routine for kids is well planned and most times the day before.
PREPARE THE NIGHT BEFORE
Layout school uniforms, water bottles, school bags the night before.
Some parents prefer having a bath the night before so that the school morning routine is quicker especially with the winter days insight.
For my younger child, I give him a bath , dinner and bedtime. For older kids I make sure that they don’t get screen time one hour before bed. Watching screens before bed interferes with good sleep.
A good night’s sleep is essential so the child is fresh and ready to take on a new day.
WAKE UP EARLIER THAN MY CHILDREN
I shared the difference it makes in my routine blog post check it out, gives me time for myself , with myself as I prepare to give them my best, and prepare before they wake up.I go for my morning run which puts me in a good mood and that mood transfers to everyone in the household, believe me.
SET THE MOOD FOR A CALM MORNING
There is a strict rule in our home for no screens in the morning. Instead, our son gets time with open-ended toys like magnetic tiles, blocks or his cars. We also play music as we get ready singing and dancing it puts us in a calm mood.
PACK SIMPLE LUNCH/SNACK
GIVE THEM HEADS UPS
This is a big one. Before every next step in the routine (especially for younger children)give the child a heads-up about what is coming next. This gives a child an idea of what to do next or what to expect. We also discuss and plan so they know the happenings to avoid tamtrums.
You can also use tricks like a 2-minute timer to get dressed or a morning routine chart to get the kids excited about getting dressed and moving along to the next steps in their routine.
HAVE FAMILY MORNING TRADITIONS
Having family traditions like praying before we leave the house or in the car, reading or saying positive affirmations then having a song playlist for the car ride something that the child will look forward to in the morning will also cheer them up.
TRY TO ALWAYS SAY BYE WITH A HUG OR KISS
No matter how the morning turns out remember to always give your child a hug and kiss as you send him off to school. A special high-five or cute byes like, “See you later Alligator” leave your child with a smile on his face and a sprint in his step.
So there you have it, the secret to a stress-free parenting life is establishing solid routines. Especially on school mornings, all you want is for your children to leave home in a happy state of mind and a good routine ensures just that.
I must add that the children must also be involved in the preparation too so that they get used to the routine.
